Castle Gardens

English Garden

The castle is surrounded by an English landscape garden. Approximately 11 hectares of land consisting of a maze of paths ,interspersed with meadows, ponds, bridges and benches. The English garden has a lot of vistas, the spacious 130 year old trees form a romantic scenery.

Flowering Rhododendrons with a Sequoia at the back

Wholly in the tradition of an English landscape garden exotics abound. These are trees which are not initially from Western Europe but have been imported from other continents. Right next to the castle is a sequoiadendron giganteum. This giant came originally from California and can grow to become a thousand years old.

Two big plane trees

Another exotic is the oriental plane tree together with the common plane tree., these huge colossal trees line the former entrance from the castle

In the distance the monumental weeping beech

Also in the park is a magnificent weeping beech, a few meta sequoias, a tulip tree, oaks, beeches and maples. On the ground are ivy, lily of the valley and rhododendrons.

In the spring the lawn is covered by crocusses

Also essential for English gardens are the lawns and meadows, in front of the castle is a large elongated lawn that weaves through the trees. At the back there is a meadow, on this meadow land you can find some rare flowers.

The north side of the premises

The north side of the park was rearranged in 1990, before that there was a popular wood where elders and nettles grew. This part of the park has slowly been returned back to nature. The planting and cultivation of young oaks and ashes has been thinned out so that the rest of the trees can develop. The area is now inaccessible to the public and gives habitation for birds and small mammals.

A fallen poplar near the river De Dommel

In 2003 three young wood owls left the nest, now nests of young kingfishers, sparrow hawks and several kinds of woodpeckers have been seen. The castle park is near a small stream from the Dommel meadow and is connected to the green Dommel valley with the Collse Zeggen. This means that all the year round there are various animals to be seen.
